Review:

I'm going to start out by being totally honest and say that when I first opened this book and started reading, I had a feeling I was stepping into a taping of the Oprah show.  You know the one....... Person with bad childhood, blaming their upbringing on all their short comings?  Well after a couple of chapters in I realized that I was dead wrong!

This story starts out set in Galveston, Texas.  You meet Emma and Jansen Carter, a married couple with two adorable daughters. Jansen is totally and hopelessly devoted to Emma.  To anyone looking in this would seem like the perfect life, but on the inside Emma is crying out for help.  From the beginning of the story you immediately get the picture that Emma is troubled and plays a very non existent part in her families life.  She carries around so much pain from her past, and it causes her to be cold and aloof to her husband and daughters.  As you venture a short way into the story, tragedy strikes involving Emma's mom Anne. Emma has to make the trip back to her hometown and the rest of the story takes place in Ventura, Ca.

Emma faces a lot of ghosts from her past, and along the way pieces to her mothers puzzle start to fall into place.  You start to see a change taking place in Emma.  She realizes that she needs to embrace her past and offer up forgiveness.  Instead of holding on to the bad, she begins to focus on the good, and the opportunity that she has to create a wonderful life with her family.

I had so many emotions while reading this book.  At times I wanted to slap Emma so she would see what was right in front of her.  But as more of her past was revealed I emphasized with her and felt her pain and heartache.  As the story winds to a close you get to see Emma reconnecting with her daughters and reigniting the love between her and Jansen.

I felt at times there were parts of the story that could have been elaborated on a little more.  It's hard to put my finger  on exactly what was off to me, but I didn't feel as connected as I would have liked to Emma.  All in all this was a great, emotional read that I'm glad that I got the opportunity to experience.
